Myles Powell scored 10 straight points to turn a Marquette lead into a Seton Hall victory Wednesday night as the Pirates upset the No. 16 Golden Eagles 73-64 in a Big East Conference matchup at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Powell finished with a game-high 34 points, his seventh 30-plus point performance of the season, as Seton Hall upped its record to 17-12 overall and 8-9 in the conference. It was a huge win for the Pirates, who snapped a three-game losing streak and enhanced their chances of an NCAA Tournament at-large berth.
Sam Hauser pumped in 25 points for Marquette (23-7, 12-5), which fell a game behind Villanova for first place in the conference. Leading scorer Markus Howard made just 2 of 11 shots in 28 minutes, finishing with six points and five turnovers.
Trailling 64-57 with 4:20 left after Quincy McKnight started a run of 18 straight points to end the game, Seton Hall turned to Powell. He canned a 3-pointer from the left wing, then hit a driving layup and a pullup in the lane with 2:52 remaining to tie the game.
Powell then drilled an NBA-range 3-ball with 2:26 left to give the Pirates the lead for good. Seton Hall salted the game away with six straight free throws in the last minute.
Both teams claimed clear advantages during a back-and-forth first half. Marquette shot more accurately and dominated the boards, while Seton Hall forced a spate of turnovers to create extra shots that helped keep it in contention.
A 3-point play by Powell with 12:11 left in the half gave the Pirates a 16-12 lead, but the Golden Eagles rattled off seven straight points for a 19-16 edge on a 3-pointer by Hauser with 10:31 remaining. The teams were tied three more times before Marquette finally achieved a bit of separation.
It went on a 12-6 burst over the half's final 4:17, with Howard capping it with his only field goal of the half, a 3-ball with 1:31 remaining. That gave the Golden Eagles a 37-31 advantage at the break, one achieved despite 13 turnovers.
