Desmond Bane poured in a career-high 34 points while tying his all-time best with six 3-pointers to lead visiting TCU to resounding 69-56 win over Texas on Saturday at Austin, Texas, in the Big 12 Conference regular-season finale for both teams.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Horned Frogs (19-12, 7-11 in Big 12) and gave notice that TCU will be tough out in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament.
Bane finished 14-for-20 from the floor and 6-for-8 from beyond the arc as TCU's only double-digit scorer. The Horned Frogs outshot Texas 54.0 percent to 37.3 percent for the game.
Jaxson Hayes scored a career-high 19 points for Texas (16-15, 8-10) with Matt Coleman III scoring 12 and Courtney Ramey adding 11 for the Longhorns, who have lost four of their past five games and five of their last seven.
The Longhorns led by as many as six points at 22-16 after a Dylan Osetkowski layup with 7:08 to play in the first half. That's when TCU found its stride, reeling off an 11-0 run capped by a Bane's 3-pointer over the ensuing four and a half minutes to take a 27-22 advantage.
The Horned Frogs continued their surge, closing out the half by finishing off a 19-5 spurt that granted them a 35-27 lead at intermission. Bane led TCU with 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting.
The Horned Frogs outshot Texas 54 percent to 36 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes of play and hit five of its seven 3-pointers to a 3 of 11 showing from beyond the arc. TCU also outrebounded the Longhorns 22-10 in the first half was in control despite committing nine turnovers.
Coleman paced Texas with nine points in the half, but needed eight shots to get there.
TCU, with Bane doing the majority of the damage, opened things up on the Longhorns in the second half, stretching its lead to 61-41 on Bane' 3-pointer with 9:25 to play.
Texas will be the sixth seed in next week's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City when they will battle third-seeded Kansas in the late quarterfinal game on Thursday. The Horned Frogs will be the No. 8 seed in the opening round of the tourney.
