Tyler Bey had 17 points and 10 rebounds, D'Shawn Schwartz scored 16, and the Colorado Buffaloes beat the Utah Utes 71-63 in their Pac-12 matchup in Boulder, Colo., on Saturday.
Sedrick Barefield scored a game-high 19 points for Utah (15-13, 9-7 Pac-12), which has lost three of its last four games.
The Buffaloes (17-11, 8-8) had won five in a row to get back into the thick of the Pac-12 standings but then lost two straight on a trip through the state of Washington.
The Buffaloes led by nine at halftime, and after Utah got within four, Colorado took control of the game.
With Colorado up 39-35, McKinley Wright IV and Shane Gatling hit 3-pointers around a long-range shot from the Utes' Timmy Allen. Alexander Strating's three-point play later gave the Buffaloes a 51-40 lead with 12:30 left.
Utah got within nine, but two free throws and a layup from Schwartz and Daylen Kountz's layup around a dunk from the Utes' Donnie Tillman gave Colorado a 61-48 lead, its biggest of the game, with 4:49 to play.
The Buffaloes led 63-52 with 2:42 left when the Utes made one last surge. After a field goal they fouled Evan Battey, who missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Barefield hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 63-57.
Colorado hit two 3-pointers around a Barefield jumper to go up by 10 at 69-59 with 50 seconds to play, and Utah cut it to six before the Buffaloes hung on.
Colorado scored the first six points of the game and led 8-2 before the Utes got things going. A 9-2 run gave them a lead with 12:10 left in the first half, but they scored just two points over the next 6:08 while the Buffaloes surged ahead.
Bey scored six points and assisted on another basket during a 15-4 run by Colorado that made it 27-18 with 4:28 left before intermission.
Tillman's 3-pointer pulled Utah with 30-26 with 1:53 left, but two free throws by Bey and a 3-pointer by Schwartz a second before the halftime buzzer gave the Buffaloes a 35-26 lead at the break. It was Colorado's only 3-pointer of the first half.
