David Duke and Luwane Pipkins each scored 21 points and Alpha Diallo added 17 points and 12 rebounds to help the host Providence Friars hold off visiting Stony Brook 82-78 on Saturday night.
Elijah Olaniyi scored 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting (3 of 5 from behind the arc) for the Seawolves (7-5) of the America East Conference.
Miles Latimer's 3-pointer from the left corner pulled Stony Brook within 72-68 with 55 seconds left. After Providence's Kalif Young sank two free throws, Mouhamadou Gueye hit a trey to make it 74-71 with 41 seconds to go.
Pipkins sank eight free throws in the final 40 seconds to help secure the decision for the Big East's Friars (6-5), who sank 12 of 27 overall from 3-point range.
Providence had more points off turnovers (29-12) and second-chance points (18-9).
Stony Brook scored the first 11 points of the second half to grab a 35-34 advantage. Olaniyi's five points fueled the spurt.
The Friars responded with a 12-0 run -- including five points from Diallo -- to go ahead 46-35 with 14:22 left.
After Stony Brook got within six points, A.J. Reeves' 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run that gave Providence a 56-42 cushion with 10:33 to go. The Seawolves then scored eight consecutive points to cut their deficit to six with 8:43 left.
Duke scored 11 points and Pipkins added 10 to help the Friars build a 34-24 halftime lead. Providence led by as many as 14 points, 32-187, with under three minutes before intermission.
The Seawolves sank just 2 of 13 first-half 3-point tries.
The Friars scored 12 points off nine Stony Brook turnovers. The Seawolves managed just three points off eight Providence turnovers.
Ahead 17-13, the Friars scored the next seven points to build an 11-point lead with 9:54 left in the half. The run was comprised of Duke's layup, Diallo's dunk and Duke's 3-pointer.
Providence will play Florida in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Dec. 17 and Texas on Dec. 21 before beginning Big East play against Georgetown on Dec. 31.
Stony Brook will play at No. 9 Virginia on Wednesday night.
