Joe Wieskamp and Luka Garza combined for 47 points, and host Iowa knocked off 12th-ranked Maryland 67-49 on Friday night in a Big Ten Conference game in Iowa City.
Wieskamp got nine of his 26 points during a pivotal 14-0 first-half run that turned a five-point deficit into a 24-15 Iowa lead. Wieskamp hit two free throws at 9:12 that allowed the Hawkeyes (11-5, 2-3) to tie the game at 15-15. He drilled 4 of 5 3-pointers on his way to 18 first-half points as Iowa built a 38-24 advantage at the intermission.
The Terrapins (13-3, 3-2) had 12 turnovers in the first half on their way to 17 for the game and shot just 32.7 percent (17 of 52) from the field in seeing their three-game winning streak ended. Maryland led 15-10 with 11:44 remaining on two Donta Scott free throws, but Iowa rattled off the next 14 points, starting with the first Wieskamp 3-pointer.
After hitting a season-low 12.1 percent (4 of 33) from 3-point range in a loss at Nebraska on Tuesday, the Hawkeyes were terrific from deep, canning 6 of 10 behind the arc in the first half and finishing 9 of 23 (39.1 percent).
Jalen "Stix" Smith led Maryland with 13 points, but the Terrapins scored a season-low 24 points in the first half and never got closer than within 10 points of Iowa in the second half. Smith got a putback layup to make it 44-34 with 14:37 to play. Maryland connected on just 4 of 22 3-point attempts. The Terrapins' 49 points were the fewest in a Big Ten game for the program.
The Hawkeyes led by as many as 22 points when Garza, on his way to 21 points and 13 rebounds, hit a hook shot to make it 67-45 at 2:03. Maryland hadn't trailed by more than 15 points in any previous game this season.
This contest began a pivotal stretch of four of five games on the road for Maryland, continuing Tuesday at Wisconsin. Iowa is at Northwestern on Tuesday, then has three in a row at home before traveling to Maryland on Jan. 30. This was just Iowa's third home game since Nov. 24.
