Duncan Lexander scored a game-high 17 points and drilled a pair of key 3-pointers in the final 2:29 to lift visiting Charleston Southern to a 68-60 upset of Missouri on Tuesday night at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.
The Buccaneers earned the program's first victory against a Power 5 team since a Nov. 14, 2014, win at Ole Miss. Tuesday's game was Charleston Southern's first action in nine days and the end of a stretch of five straight games away from home.
Missouri squandered a nine-point lead in the second half en route to its third straight loss. Scrambling to rally down the stretch, the Tigers were unable to defend the perimeter. The Buccaneers shot 10-for-22 (45.5 percent) from long range. Lexander connected on five 3s, including a trey that gave the team a 62-57 edge witih 1:39 left.
Jeremiah Tilmon scored all 15 of his points in the second half and reserve Mitchell Smith chipped in 10 points for Missouri, which shot 35.7 percent from the field but outrebounded the Buccaneers 47-30.
Travis Anderson (15 points), Phlandrous Fleming (11) and Ty Jones (10) also scored in double figures for the Buccaneers. Charleston Southern -- which suffered losses of 44, 29, 48 and 35 points in four of its past five games -- remained pesky in its first all-time meeting against Missouri.
The Tigers seemingly created separation behind a second-half surge from Tilmon, who scored eight successive Missouri points to put the hosts ahead 39-30 with 14:50 to go. The Buccaneers responded, however, using treys from Jones and Lexander to fuel a 9-0 run. A Fleming layup capped the surge and gave the Buccaneers a 44-43 edge with 9:14 to go.
Missouri struggled to 34.5 percent first-half shooting -- including 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) from long range -- but still entered the break with a 28-23 lead. Charleston Southern opened the game on a 14-5 run and led as late as the 3:05 mark of the first half, but the Tigers recovered.
Dru Smith fouled out for Missouri with 8:21 left in the game.
