Greg Elliott scored a career high 17 points and Theo John added 15 as Marquette tweaked its starting lineup and went on to a 73-57 road victory over Butler in a Big East Conference game at Indianapolis.
Elliott made his first start of the season, and just his sixth in three seasons at Marquette, while Jamal Cain came off the bench for the first time this season. The adjustment helped the Golden Eagles (10-12, 6-10 Big East) end a three-game losing streak.
Cain had 14 points and 14 rebounds in his new reserve assignment for Marquette, while Dawson Garcia added 12 points. The Golden Eagles had their largest margin of victory in a Big East game this season.
Chuck Harris scored 21 points for Butler, who played without leading rebounder Bryce Nze for the first time this season. Nze was out with a groin injury, with his status also in question for Sunday's game at Xavier.
Bryce Golden added 18 points for Butler (7-12, 6-10), which lost its second consecutive game and fell for the fifth time in its last seven contests.
Elliott made a quick impact for Marquette when he was fouled on a 3-point attempt 29 seconds into the game and made two of his three free throws. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 21-10 lead just over 11 minutes into the game.
Marquette held a 41-25 advantage at halftime as Elliott led the Golden Eagles with 10 points over the opening 20 minutes, matching his point total over his previous five games combined.
Marquette pushed its lead to as many as 28 points in the second half before finishing off its second victory over Butler in a span of 15 days.
Butler's Christian David received his first start of the season, in his sixth game back from an ACL injury, and played 21 minutes but did not score a point.
Marquette outrebounded Butler 39-24 and shot 45.8 percent from the field to 33.9 percent for the Bulldogs. Butler was 4 of 21 from 3-point range until making three more in the closing minutes.
