ISLANDERS 5, PENGUINS 3: Frans Nielsen had two goals and an assist as New York snapped its 11-game losing streak in Pittsburgh.
The Islanders rallied to score three times in the second period to slow Pittsburgh’s bid for the top spot in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference and snap the Penguins' 10-game winning streak at home.
The Penguins, who had won 14 of their previous 16 games, had 54 shots on goal - 12 by James Neal, including 22 in the third period. Neal scored twice.
Both teams changed goaltenders at the start of the third period with New York leading 5-2. Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was lifted for Brad Thiessen after absorbing an inadvertent elbow from teammate Paul Martin on Nielsen’s second goal at 18:08 of the second period.
Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov suffered a lower-body injury earlier in the period, which prompted Al Montoya to come on in relief.
Josh Bailey had three assists for the Islanders, who host the Penguins in the second half of the home-and-home series Thursday.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang (lower body) didn’t play. … With an assist, Pittsburgh forward Pascal Dupuis extended his point scoring streak to 11 games (eight goals, six assists). ... Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has 12 points in his last six games (six goals, six assists).
