LIGHTNING 4, JETS 3 (OT): Steven Stamkos became the 20th player in NHL history to score 60 goals in a season and Teddy Purcell completed his second career hat trick 1:07 into overtime as visiting Tampa Bay defeated Winnipeg in the season finale for both.
Stamkos took a pass from Martin St. Louis and swooped into the slot to score 3:29 into the third period, joining Alex Ovechkin as the only players to score 60 since 1995-96. The goal gave Tampa a 3-1 advantage.
Jim Slater scored 1:30 later for the Jets, then swept in a pass from Blake Wheeler with 53 seconds left in regulation to tie it.
Defenseman Victor Hedman set up Purcell in the slot for the winner, his 24th goal of the season.
Purcell scored on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle after a face-off win by captain Vincent Lecavalier at 17:49 of the first period. He knocked in a nifty, cross-ice pass from Lecavalier 1:12 into the second for a 2-0 lead. J.T. Brown had an assist on the second goal for his first career NHL point.
Nik Antropov cut the lead in half for the Jets, one-timing Antti Miettinen’s backhand feed from behind the goal line at 8:53.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay went 6-3-1 in its last 10 games. … Winnipeg finished 23-13-5 at home. … Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman (twice), along with the team’s founder and current radio color analyst Phil Esposito (four times) scored 60 goals in a season. … Stamkos reached the 300-shot mark for the first time in his career.
