Avalanche 3, Red Wings 2 (OT): Defenseman Andre Benoit's goal 4:28 into overtime lifted Colorado past host Detroit, spoiling Nicklas Lidstrom's number retirement ceremony.
Moments after the Avalanche had killed off a 4-on-3 disadvantage, Benoit skated untouched to the right circle and one-timed rookie Nathan MacKinnon's pass over Jimmy Howard's blocker and just under the crossbar. Matt Duchene and PA Parenteau had the other goals for Colorado, while Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 35 saves.
Defenseman Niklas Kronwall and Tomas Jurco replied for the Red Wings, who dropped to 11-11-10 at home. Howard turned aside 22 shots in defeat.
Detroit opened the scoring 12:33 into the game, as Kronwall finished off a give-and-go with Joakim Andersson by flicking a high backhand shot past Giguere's left shoulder. Duchene drew the Avalanche even near the midway point of the second period, redirecting the puck past Howard after defenseman Erik Johnson's initial shot caromed off the end boards and directly into the low slot.
Jurco restored the Red Wings edge just under two minutes later, converting Riley Sheahan's pass from point-blank range with defenseman Nick Holden in the box for tripping. Parenteau squared things again 5:49 into the third, pouncing on a loose puck to the right of Howard and jamming a backhander past his pad.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lidstrom was given a raucous standing ovation as his No. 5 banner was raised to the Joe Louis Arena rafters. The future Hall-of-Famer spent his entire 21-year career with the Red Wings, retiring in 2012 with 264 goals and 878 assists in 1,564 career regular-season games. ... MacKinnon's assist gives him a point in 13 straight games, the longest streak in NHL history by a player 18 years of age or younger. The previous mark of 12 games was set by Wayne Gretzky during the 1979-80 campaign. ... Duchene's goal was his 20th of the season, the third time he has reached the mark.
