Devils 3, Senators 2 (OT): Jaromir Jagr scored his 707th career goal 3:39 into overtime as visiting New Jersey emerged victorious in the first game played in Ottawa since a national tragedy occurred in Canada's capital.
With Clarke MacArthur serving a high-sticking penalty, Jagr used Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki as a screen before wristing a shot from the slot past Robin Lehner (26 saves) to move within one tally of Mike Gartner for sixth place on the all-time list. The goal was the 125th game-winner - 19th in overtime - of Jagr's career.
Rookie Damon Severson also tallied and set up fellow defenseman Marek Zidlicky's power-play goal late in the second period as the Devils snapped their four-game winless streak (0-2-2). Cory Schneider finished with 33 saves as he continued his stretch as the lone NHL goaltender to start every one of his team's contests this season.
Bobby Ryan scored a power-play goal with 6:09 remaining in the third period, sweeping home a centering feed from captain Erik Karlsson to forge a 2-2 tie. Alex Chiasson added a man-advantage tally for the Senators, who played their first game since last Saturday and saw their four-game winning streak come to a halt.
Prior to the contest, the teams alternated players to comprise a circle at center ice and Ottawa joined the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs in a coordinated tribute to honor slain soldiers Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent. Military personnel and local first responders stood at attention to show their respect for Cirillo, who was shot to death at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on Wednesday, and Vincent, who was killed in a hit-and-run attack near Montreal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tensions escalated between the teams late in the second period after Devils LW Tuomo Ruutu leveled Karlsson near the boards. Senators D Chris Phillips immediately responded and received an extra unsportmanlike conduct penalty. ... Chiasson snapped a scoreless draw by skating out of the corner and beating Schneider at 10:09 of the second period, but Severson answered with a slap shot from right circle 80 seconds later. The rookie then set up Zidlicky for a one-timer from above the left circle with 3:15 remaining in the session to give New Jersey a 2-1 lead. ... Ottawa was playing its first game since the attacks on Wednesday, which caused the postponement of its contest versus provincial rival Toronto. That game has been rescheduled for Nov. 9. ... Members of the Canadian Forces were introduced during a timeout in the second period, resulting in a standing ovation.
