Flyers 4, Avalanche 3: Captain Claude Giroux scored two goals and set up another as Philadelphia built a large lead before holding on for its fifth straight home victory.
Wayne Simmonds recorded a tally and an assist while Brayden Schenn also scored for the Flyers, who went 3-for-6 on the power play while extending their home point streak to seven contests. Jakub Voracek collected three assists and Steve Mason made 36 saves en route to his third consecutive win.
Former Flyer Max Talbot notched a goal and an assist while Alex Tanguay and Zach Redmond each added a tally for the Avalanche, who have lost their last four visits to Philadelphia. Reto Berra turned aside 23 shots for Colorado, which outshot the Flyers 21-6 in the third period.
After Nathan MacKinnon received a five-minute major for boarding defenseman Luke Schenn late in the first period, Philadelphia used the ensuing power play to build a 2-0 lead. Giroux fired the puck into the top right corner of the net from the left faceoff circle with three seconds left in the session thanks to a screen set by Simmonds, who scored on a turnaround shot from the left of the crease 2:48 into the second.
Brayden Schenn converted a feed from behind the net by Matt Read with 8:36 remaining in the period and Giroux tallied during a 5-on-3 advantage less than five minutes later for a four-goal cushion. Colorado made a spirited comeback attempt with three goals in the third but was unable to cash in on a late 6-on-4 situation that lasted two minutes.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Luke Schenn appeared to be favoring his left shoulder as he left the ice after being pushed from behind into the end boards by MacKinnon and did not return. ... Giroux, who doubled his goal total for the season, was a beast on faceoffs - winning 22 of his 33 draws. The rest of the Flyers went 9-25 on faceoffs. ... Philadelphia D Braydon Coburn (lower body) was in the lineup for the first time since the season opener and registered one shot, two hits and four penalty minutes while finishing with a minus-2 rating in 20:18 of ice time.
