Coyotes 5, Oilers 2: Former Edmonton prospect Tobias Rieder scored a pair of short-handed goals 58 seconds apart early in the second period as visiting Arizona sent its reeling Pacific Division rival to its 10th straight setback (0-7-3).
Mikkel Boedker collected a tally and an assist to increase his point total to seven in the season series for the Coyotes, who snapped a three-game winless streak and improved to 18-1-3 in their last 22 meetings with the Oilers. Martin Erat and defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson each converted on the power play and Mike Smith (25 saves) ended an 0-5-2 stretch with his first win since Nov. 7.
Jordan Eberle scored a man-advantage goal and defenseman Jeff Petry also tallied for Edmonton, which has dropped eight straight at home (0-7-1). Taylor Hall notched an assist to extend his point streak against Arizona to seven games.
After being held scoreless for 132:59, the Coyotes forged a 1-1 tie just 36 seconds into the second period as Rieder skated in on a breakaway and slid the puck between the pads of Viktor Fasth (19 saves). The 21-year-old German wasn't done as he fended off Oilers defenseman Nikita Nikitin before his diving wrist shot from the slot gave Arizona the advantage.
Ekman-Larsson's shot from the point at 4:53 of the second doubled the Coyotes' lead and avenged his role in Edmonton's opening goal of the contest when he was beaten to the puck on the doorstep by Eberle. Boedker picked up an assist on Ekman-Larsson's tally and netted his eighth in his last eight games versus the Oilers with 17 seconds left in the session.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Coyotes acquired Rieder from Edmonton on March 29, 2013 in a deal for F Kale Kessy. Rieder was the 114th overall pick of the 2011 draft, while Kessy was taken three picks earlier. ... Boedker recorded three goals and an assist in Arizona's 7-4 triumph over the Oilers on Oct. 15 before scoring the eventual game-winning tally in the third period of a 2-1 win on Nov. 16. ... Smith improved to 10-1-1 in 14 career games versus Edmonton.
