Bruins 3, Penguins 2 (OT): Patrice Bergeron scored his second goal of the game at 2:43 of overtime as visiting Boston snapped its three-game skid (0-0-3).
After Beau Bennett hit the post early in overtime, the Bruins regained their composure and won in controversial fashion as Milan Lucic's wrist shot from the point was redirected by the stick of Bergeron and past Marc-Andre Fleury. Video review proved inconclusive in determining whether the puck hit Pittsburgh defenseman Simon Despres' glove or Bergeron's stick, thus allowing the referee's call on the ice to stand as a goal for Boston's veteran center.
Bergeron also scored late in the second period for his second goal in as many games for Boston. Captain Zdeno Chara added a tally, Lucic notched two assists and Tuukka Rask turned aside 37 shots in the victory.
Evgeni Malkin scored his team-leading 18th goal and added an assist for the Penguins, who have dropped six of their last eight (2-4-2) but gained a point to move past the idle New York Islanders for sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division. Bennett also tallied, Despres and fellow defenseman Christian Ehrhoff each recorded an assist and Fleury finished with 21 saves.
Malkin made a brilliant spin move behind the net before feeding Bennett, who converted from the right doorstep 3:37 into the contest to open the scoring. Chara's blast from above the left faceoff circle beat Fleury with 2:03 remaining in the first period and Bergeron cleaned up a rebound with 4:23 remaining in the second to give Boston its first lead, but Malkin unleashed a rocket from above the left circle 14 seconds into the third to forge a 2-2 tie.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Chara has scored 17 goals against Pittsburgh, his most versus any team. ... Penguins D Paul Martin logged 20:17 of ice time in his return from an eight-game absence due to an undisclosed injury. ... Pittsburgh failed on all four power-play opportunities to drop to 1-for-19 in its last seven contests.
