Evander Kane scored a career-high four goals to lead the San Jose Sharks to a crazy 7-4 victory over the Calgary Flames in NHL action Friday night in Calgary.
Kane, acquired from the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline, hadn't posted a hat trick in the first eight-plus seasons of his career, but did it and added one for good measure at the Scotiabank Saddledome while running his season goals total to 25.
He opened the scoring exactly six minutes into the affair -- a fortunate goal as his long shot ricocheted off the stick of Flames defenseman Dougie Hamilton and into the net -- before tying the game 2-2 at the 6:29 mark of the middle frame. Kane added another late in the second period to break open a 3-3 tie and then stuck a dagger in the Flames' collective hearts with his fourth goal at 1:02 of the third period to make it a 6-3 affair.
Sharks goalie Martin Jones made 30 saves in his team's third straight win.
It was actually a close affair through the first half of the contest. After Kane opened the scoring, Troy Brouwer scored for Calgary at 16:42 of the opening period.
Mark Jankowski's goal 2:10 into the second period gave the Flames their first lead, which Kane erased. Johnny Gaudreau scored at 10:16 of the second period to give Calgary a 3-2 edge, but it was all Sharks from that point onward.
Kevin Labanc made it a 3-3 game when he fired a high, far-side shot that Flames goalie Mike Smith flubbed at 11:42. Kane netted his hat-trick goal at 16:32 and then Tomas Hertl made it a 5-3 game with 1:58 remaining in the second period.
Smith was pulled from the Flames' net after Kane's fourth goal, the victim of six goals on 20 shots, in favor of backup David Rittich.
Calgary's Micheal Ferland scored his first goal in 17 games at 14:25 of the third period to make it a 6-4 count, but Eric Fehr added an empty netter with 3:58 remaining to round out the scoring.
Curiously, Kane -- who has collected five goals and 10 points in eight games since being traded to San Jose -- and Hertl (1-1-2) were the lone Sharks players to net more than one point despite the team's seven tallies.
