Petr Mrazek made 20 saves against his former team, Micheal Ferland scored for the fourth straight game, and the visiting Carolina Hurricanes snapped a three-game losing streak by topping the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Monday.
Mrazek recorded 13 shutouts in while playing parts of six seasons with Detroit. He nearly had another, as the Wings didn't score until the third period.
Defenseman Justin Faulk scored his first goal of the season, while Ferland tallied for a team-high sixth time. Jordan Martinook added an empty-net goal. Justin Williams, Valentin Zykov, Sebastian Aho and Jaccob Slavin contributed one assist apiece in the victory.
Jimmy Howard made 36 saves for the Red Wings. Andreas Athanasiou scored their lone goal with assists from Thomas Vanek and Frans Nielsen.
The Red Wings were coming off their first win of the season, an overtime triumph at Florida on Saturday.
Carolina had the first 14 shots on goal but didn't score until later in the first period. Dennis Cholowski took the first Detroit shot on goal 13 1/2 minutes into the game. Mrazek made a pad save on a Justin Abdelkader breakaway shot two minutes later.
The Hurricanes scored on the power play with 1:35 minute remaining in the period. Faulk took a backhanded pass from Williams and fired it from the point past Howard.
Ferland made it 2-0 at the 8:35 mark of the second period on another power play. Aho passed from the left point to Zykov down low. He then pushed the puck to Ferland, who one-timed the puck over Howard's glove hand.
The Wings broke through with 7:58 remaining on a two-on-one opportunity. Vanek slid the puck from the right circle to a wide-open Athanasiou, who converted his third goal this season.
Faulk stopped an Athanasiou shot with Mrazek out of position on a power play with five minutes remaining.
The Wings caught a break when Carolina's Dougie Hamilton was whistled for a delay of game penalty with 1:44 left, but Detroit pulled Howard and lost the puck in the Carolina zone. Martinook then scored an empty-net goal with 44 seconds to go.
