A late equalizer and Johnny Gaudreau's overtime goal gave the Calgary Flames a comeback 2-1 road victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
After being unable to solve Sabres goaltender Carter Hutton over the first 59 minutes of the game, Calgary finally broke through at the 19:04 mark of the third period. Matthew Tkachuk scored his fifth goal of the season, redirecting a shot in front of Hutton to finally put his team on the board.
After the Flames had to kill a penalty for the first two minutes of overtime, Gaudreau ended the game 2:40 into the extra frame, netting the score after a nice passing play with Sean Monahan and Mark Giordano.
Gaudreau and Monahan led all Flames players with five shots apiece, and Monahan assisted on Tkachuk's game-tying effort.
Hutton and David Rittich delivered strong efforts at both ends of the ice in the goaltending duel, though Hutton had a busier night, facing 38 shots from the Flames while the Sabres managed just 29 against Rittich. Calgary also had the advantage of five power plays to Buffalo's two.
Before Tkachuk's marker, the Flames' best chance came in the opening minute of the second period. Elias Lindholm was wide open on the right side of Buffalo's net, only to be denied by an impressive stick save from Hutton. A video review was required to confirm the non-goal, as the puck dribbled over the line after the whistle was blown.
Jack Eichel opened the scoring with a wrist shot past Rittich 16:30 into the first period. The goal snapped an eight-game scoreless streak for Eichel, though the center remained a big factor in the Sabres' offense with six assists in Buffalo's previous four games.
The Sabres have now absorbed overtime losses in each of their past two games, as they dropped a 5-4 result to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.
Calgary earned its second road win in as many nights over Atlantic Division opposition, after defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on Monday.
