Rickard Rakell scored on a breakaway 14 seconds into overtime as the Anaheim Ducks rallied for a 2-1 victory against the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Friday afternoon.
The Ducks tied the score on Nick Ritchie's goal with 16.2 seconds remaining in regulation. Rakell got an assist on that goal.
The Oilers suffered their first defeat in the Ken Hitchcock era. Hitchcock replaced the fired Todd McLellan as coach Tuesday. Edmonton won 4-3 in overtime at San Jose in Hitchcock's debut the same day.
A long lead pass from behind the Anaheim net by defenseman Brandon Montour sprung Rakell on the breakaway at the Edmonton blue line.
Rakell outskated Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl and put a backhanded shot on net, which goaltender Mikko Koskinen stopped with his right pad. But Rakell was able to poke the rebound underneath the goalie for the winner. Ryan Getzlaf also got an assist.
Ducks goaltender John Gibson made 27 saves. Koskinen stopped 23 shots.
With Anaheim's net empty, Ritchie pounced on rebound of a Rakell shot shortly before the end of regulation and slid the puck inside the right post. Marcus Pettersson also got an assist.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 8:55 of the third. Alex Chiasson started the rush in the neutral zone with a nifty pass to Connor McDavid on the right wing. McDavid quickly found Nugent-Hopkins, whose shot from the left faceoff circle beat Gibson and ricocheted into the net off the left post.
The Ducks appeared to break the tie early in the third period, but a goal was overturned by video review.
Jakob Silfverberg worked the puck behind the Edmonton net and fed Adam Henrique in the slot. Henrique's shot squeezed between Koskinen's left arm and torso but the puck rolled to the goal line, where defenseman Kris Russell was able to poke it away. After a review, the goal call was overturned.
Anaheim wore its throwback uniforms to its Mighty Ducks days.
