Jeff Petry had a goal and an assist and Carey Price had 26 saves as the host Montreal Canadiens snapped a five-game winless streak with a 3-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.
Brendan Gallagher and Tyler Toffoli also scored goals for Montreal which won for the first time in three games under interim head coach Dominique Ducharme, who took over for Claude Julien on Feb. 24.
Artem Zub scored for Ottawa, which lost for just the second time in its past six games. Joey Daccord, a seventh-round pick in 2015 out of Arizona State making his second career start, stopped 30 of 32 shots.
Senators right wing Drake Batherson, who entered the game having scored in a goal in a franchise record six straight games, nearly made it seven in a row five minutes into a scoreless first period when he rang a wrist shot off the goal post.
Montreal took a 2-0 lead midway through the second period with a pair of power-play goals over the span of 2:04. Gallagher, rushing down the slot, got the first when he buried a no-look backhand pass from Corey Perry for his seventh goal of the season.
A split-second after Gallagher's shot went into the net, Ottawa defenseman Erik Gudbranson hit Gallagher in the face with his stick and drew blood for a four-minute high-sticking penalty. The Canadiens capitalized four seconds into the second minor when Petry blasted a slap shot from the top of the right circle off the far post and into the net for his seventh goal of the season.
Ottawa cut it to 2-1 late in the second period when Zub, taking advantage of a collision in the slot between Ottawa's Tim Stutzle and Montreal's Joel Armia that sent both players sprawling, crept into the right circle and beat Price with a snap shot to his blocker side.
The Senators nearly tied it midway through the third period when Austin Watson's shot clanged off the goalpost.
Ottawa pulled Daccord with 1:05 left for an extra attacker and Toffoli sealed the win with an empty-netter with 20.9 seconds to go, his 13th goal of the season.
